The Legacy of a Driven Man
Why Rudolf Geigy set out for Africa
Rudolf Geigy, son of the wealthy Basel industrial family decided against a career in the family group J. R. Geigy Ltd and became a zoologist. He dedicated his life to researching and combating tropical infectious diseases, malaria, sleeping sickness or African relapsing fever. In 1943 he founded the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel and in the 1950s two research laboratories in Africa, and invested in the training of health experts on the ground. On the one hand he was admired and well-liked by his students; on the other, he spread fear among any employees he had little time for, and especially in his own family.
A portrait of a strong personality.
